Private Property

Private property towing. Done by the book.

Managing a parking lot in Massachusetts isn't like managing one anywhere else. A tow from private property is governed by M.G.L. c. 266 s. 120D and priced at the state Department of Public Utilities maximum rates in 220 CMR 272.00. The law requires No Parking signs posted at all entrances and exits, and the property owner must notify the local police chief in writing before a vehicle is removed. We aren't the tow company, and we don't hold that authority. What we do is connect property managers, HOAs, retail landlords and apartment complexes with tow companies that follow the law.

What do drivers ask about private property towing?

Is private property towing legal in Massachusetts?

Yes, when it's done right, and Massachusetts is unusually specific about what right means. Under M.G.L. c. 266 s. 120D a private-property tow requires No Parking signs posted at all entrances and exits, and the property owner has to notify the local police chief in writing before the vehicle is removed. The tow is priced at the DPU maximum rates in 220 CMR 272.00, and if the company fails any provision of the statute it must release the vehicle with no removal or storage charge. The tow company, not this matcher, is the party that has to follow the rest of the law.

Do you work with HOAs?

Yes. HOAs are a frequent private-property client type. A tow company audits the existing signage, updates the parking rules with the board, and sets a patrol schedule that fits the community. Board members don't make the tow call; the tow company does, per the agreed rules.

Can I call to tow a specific car in my lot?

If there's a signed property management agreement with a tow company, yes. The property manager (or a designated contact) calls, confirms the vehicle and the violation, and we connect that call to a company that follows M.G.L. c. 266 s. 120D. Without an agreement on file, a company can't legally tow from a property they don't have under contract.

What if a resident forgets their permit and gets towed?

They pay the release fee at the operator's lot and get the car back, with full paperwork. An operator only tows after the sign check. If a resident calls in a good-faith mistake (permit in glove box, etc.), the release is handled professionally and the situation documented. Property managers can also preauthorize per-vehicle exceptions.

What if my car was towed by the city or a suburb, not from a private lot?

That is a completely different process. A City of Boston tow goes to the city tow lot at 200 Frontage Road, Boston, MA 02118. The city tow fee is $90, and storage is $3 per hour up to $15 per day. The lot is staffed Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 10:30 PM with automated kiosks 24 hours, and you can look up the plate at cityofboston.gov/towing/search. In a suburb the tow goes to that town's own impound, where the charges are capped by the DPU maximum rates, not the Boston schedule. Once your car is released, call us for the onward tow.
